Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) / Forensic  Exams

We know that after a sexual assault, it's hard to know what to do next. You may have mixed emotions on what your next step will be. You may not know all your options:

  • Do you want to report to law enforcement?
  • Do you have to report?
  • Do you need medical attention?

We want to provide victims with their options so you can make an informed decision and if you choose to have a SANE exam.

What is a SANE exam?

A Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) exam is a specialized medical forensic examination for individuals who have experienced sexual assault or abuse. A team of compassionate and trained professionals will guide you through the process and ensure your comfort and safety every step of the way.

A SANE can include all or some of:

  • medical assessment and treatment
  • emotional support
  • evidence collection
  • emergency contraception,
  • STD screening and treatment
  • information about reporting to law enforcement
  • help with applying for Crime Victim Compensation and SAFE funds
  • area resource information
  • ongoing emotional support.

What is a Forensic exam?

A forensic exam is similar to a SANE exam, but provides the opportunity for a victim of a violent crime such as: battery, strangulation, suffocation  to be assessed and treated for any injuries sustained by the victim.

A forensic exam can include all or some of:

  • medical assessment and treatment
  • emotional support (during the exam)
  • evidence collection
  • information about reporting to law enforcement
  • help with applying for Crime Victim Compensation and SAFE funds
  • area resource information
  • ongoing emotional support.

What to expect during a SANE exam

During a SANE or Forensic  exam, you can expect to receive compassionate care from an experienced nurse who is  specially trained to collect evidence, provide medical care, and support you through the entire process. We understand that this can be a difficult experience, and an advocate from Tri-County Council can be present to ensure your emotional well-being. We can be a voice for you, ensure you are understanding the process and your rights, or simply holding your hand and distracting you from reality. We will be there as long as YOU choose. If you want us to step out of the room or leave, at anytime, we will honor your wishes.  Advocates can also help you understand the SAFE Funds process, so no expense is incurred to the victim from the exam.
