Terminology

Understanding the terminology around domestic violence and sexual assault is crucial in addressing these issues. Primary Victim: an individual who experiences first hand abuse.

Secondary Victim: an individual who witnesses the abuse.

Intimate Partner Violence (IPV): abuse of a person by their partner or spouse.

Gaslighting: A form of emotional abuse that causes a person to question their own feelings, instincts, or sanity.

Vicarious Trauma: the emotional residue of exposure to traumatic stories and experiences of others. It is an occupational challenge for people working in the victims services field.
