Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Tri-County Council on Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault, Inc. Our volunteers play a crucial role in supporting individuals in crisis and helping to create a safer community for all.

We offer a variety of opportunities for individuals to get involved. Detailed information about each opportunity is provided below. Each volunteer role has different commitment levels and requirements.

  • If you are unable to leave your home, consider supporting our 24/7 crisis line.
  • If you can only commit to short tasks, our maintenance team could use your help.
  • If you frequently travel to the Wausau area, long-distance transportation might be ideal for you.
  • Like to be hands-on and busy!? Help us at a fundraiser!

24/7 Crisis Line

We are seeking dedicated volunteers to join our team and answer our crisis hotline after business hours. This is a unique opportunity to provide crucial support to individuals in need, right from the comfort of your own home.

Shifts are:

Monday – Friday: 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. the next day.

Saturday and Sunday: 4 p.m. to 8 a.m. the next morning.

Volunteers will have the opportunity to sign up on a monthly calendar, enabling them to contribute at times that align with their schedules. On average, volunteers can anticipate receiving 0 to 2 calls per shift.

Responsibilities:

  • Answer Crisis Hotline Calls: Calls will be transferred to your personal phone during your volunteer shift.
  • Listen Empathetically: Provide a compassionate and non-judgmental ear to callers experiencing crisis situations.
  • Ensure Confidentiality:Maintain the confidentiality of all callers to protect their privacy and trust.
  • Offer Community Resources: Share information about local resources and services that can assist callers with their specific needs.
  • Screen for Shelter Intake: Assess callers' situations to determine if they qualify for shelter intake and guide them through the process.

Requirements:

  • Strong Communication Skills: Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Empathy and Compassion: A caring and understanding attitude towards individuals in distress.
  • Calm Under Pressure: Ability to remain composed and provide support in high-stress situations.
  • Personal Phone Access: Must have access to a personal phone to receive calls.

Training Provided: All volunteers will receive comprehensive training to ensure they are well-prepared to support our callers. Training will cover active listening, crisis intervention techniques, and information about community resources.

Support Provided: All volunteers will have access to an advocate and/or staff of Tri-County to debrief after a call, provide support, or answer questions. This ensures that our volunteers feel supported and confident in their roles.

SANE Response

Provide accompaniment, information, and support through the SANE process following a sexual assault. TRAINING PROVIDED

Client Transportation

We are looking to build a dedicated network of volunteers who can provide emergency transportation for our clients. This network will be crucial in ensuring our clients get the support they need during critical times.

We will be using a phone tree system to quickly and efficiently mobilize volunteers when needed. This system will allow us to reach out to multiple volunteers simultaneously, ensuring that our clients can be transported promptly and safely.

Safety Measures: For the safety of our volunteers, clients will be picked up and dropped off at public places. This precaution helps create a secure environment for both our clients and volunteers.

Areas of Support Needed:

  • Local: Within Rhinelander
    • Frequently needed: typically, 1-4 times a week. For example: A client might need to go to the grocery store or work.
  • Tri-County Area: Within Oneida, Vilas, and Forest Counties
    • Occasionally needed: typically, once a month. For example:  A client might need to come into shelter but lives in Eagle River.
  • Long Distance: To Wausau, Green Bay, or Eau Claire (typically to catch another form of transportation)
    • Rarely needed: For example, to get better access to resources, a client may need to be relocated. A client is approved for services in a neighboring community but does not have transportation. Or a client might want to relocate out of state and needs to catch a bus.

  • Valid driver’s license
  • Proof of insurance
  • Signed confidentiality agreement

Fundraising & Events

Throughout the year, we hold fundraising and outreach events, and we need your help to make them a success! We are seeking enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers to join our team. Your support will be crucial in helping us achieve our goals and make a positive impact in our community.

Volunteer Roles Include:

  • Assisting with event setup and logistics, such as arranging tables, chairs, and decorations
  • Engaging with attendees, providing information about our cause, and answering questions
  • Helping with fundraising activities, including managing donation booths and organizing raffles
  • Supporting outreach efforts by distributing flyers, making phone calls, and using social media to spread awareness.

Maintenance & Repairs

We are seeking volunteers to assist with minor repairs and maintenance at our emergency shelter and business office. Your contributions will help us maintain a safe and welcoming environment for those in need.

Repairs are typically non-emergency, allowing us to coordinate with volunteers to find a convenient time for them.

Responsibilities include:

  • Replacing sink faucets
  • Replacing toilet parts
  • Unclogging drains
  • Patching drywall holes
  • Other minor repair tasks as needed

 Requirements:

  • Background Check * *There is a $22.00 fee to process the two required background checks. If this is a barrier, please email Timberly@tricountycouncil.org to discuss options.
  • Signed confidentiality agreement
  • Basic handyman skills
  • Personal tools are a bonus!
